Chinese President Xi Jinping has been confirmed for a record-breaking third five-year term, making him the most powerful Chinese leader since Chairman Mao and possibly the most powerful person in the world at the moment.

Xi has surrounded himself with loyal loyalists, but questions are still being asked about why former president Hu Jintao was unexpectedly – and publicly – kicked out of the ruling Communist Party congress yesterday.

We spoke to Victor Gao, a lawyer and academic who used to work closely with former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.

We started by asking him what happened to former Chinese leader Hu Jintao, who was asked to leave the stage during the Communist Party Congress in Beijing yesterday.
