What is macular degeneration?

In accordance with NHS, ‘age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common disease that affects the middle part of vision. It usually first affects people in their 50s and 60s

“It does not cause complete blindness. But it can make everyday activities like reading and recognizing faces more difficult.”

In some cases, vision aids can help, as well as eye injections from professional doctors

Risk factors may include smoking and an unhealthy diet

There are two types of AMD. Dry type is a gradual deterioration of the central retina, or macula, where cells die and stop renewing

Another type is wet AMD, which can be a much more sudden process that can cause visual impairment over months or even weeks (5,7). This appearance is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the back of the eye

Common symptoms of wet AMD include: increased sensitivity to bright light; distorted or blurred vision; dark spots or gaps in vision; difficulties in adapting to changes in lighting; incorrect perception of color and distorted straight lines; and items that appear to be the wrong shape or color

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of avoidable sight loss in the UK

Almost 40,000 people develop the ‘wet’ form of the condition each year, with symptoms including blurred or distorted vision and dark spots appearing in the vision
