Governor Newsom calls for Los Angeles City Council members to resign

California Gov. Gavin Newsom finally called out all participants Los Angeles Scandal with leaked audio in the city council about racism.

Outstanding a democrat said remaining council members Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo should follow former council president Nuri Martinez and should also resign.

Martinez resigned on October 12 after she was heard on a leaked 2021 audio recording calling a co-worker’s black son a “little monkey.” In the same recording, she is heard talking about George Gascon’s LA DA, saying, “Damn, that guy, he’s with the niggas.”

In the audio, she can be heard calling her fellow Jews “judios” (Jews in Spanish). She was referring to former state assemblyman Richard Katz and his team.

Her colleague, Ron Herrera, opened the conversation by saying, “I’m sure Katz and his team have an agenda.”

She replied, “The Judios made a deal with South Los Angeles. This is how I see it. And they’re going to screw everyone else.”

Newsom’s calls for more resignations came after a KQED debate with his gubernatorial challenger Republican Senator Brian Dahle.

Newsom said: “I wanted to give them space, but I think I made it very clear to Noura that she did the right thing. And I think others should do the same.”

He added: “I wanted to give them an opportunity to justify what they said and an opportunity to be transparent about what they said. And that’s why we hope and look forward to announcements in the near future,” it is reported Los Angeles Times.

Councilmen Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo also weighed in, in which de Leon agreed that Bonin carries her son “like an accessory,” comparing it to Martinez walking around with her Louis Vuitton bag.

Cedillo will soon leave his post, despite his election defeat to Eunices Hernández earlier this year.

In previous statements, de Leon has made it clear that he has no plans to resign. In an interview with Univision, he said: “No, I will not resign because there is a lot of work ahead.” He also described the comments as a “bad joke”.

In the leaked audio, de Leon can be heard comparing a colleague’s black son to Martinez, who arrives at a council meeting with a Louis Vuitton bag.

A week ago, they were suspended from their duties in the commission. That left the council’s housing and homelessness committees without chairs.

City council members have faced fierce criticism from colleagues, top politicians including President Joe Biden, and the public for comments they made about the October 2021 audio leak.

Before calling for his resignation, Newsom previously said: “Words matter, and racist language can cause real harm. These comments have no place in our country or our politics, and we must all model better behavior to live the values ​​that so many of us fight to defend every day.”

As de León continues to fight calls for his resignation, ABC Los Angeles reports that Black Lives Matter protesters have parked outside his house and say they won’t leave until he does.

Activist Dr Melina Abdullah told the station: “It was appalling what these people said, but it’s even more appalling what they did.”

She continued: “We need to be clear that it was Kevin de Leon’s words that were problematic when he subscribed to the diminishment and dehumanization of the black child.”

Aurora Pedro, leader of the indigenous activist organization CIELO, dismissed de Leon’s claims that the comments were just a joke, saying: “No. You made these comments. You laughed at these jokes and we heard you, and now, we’re telling you, you need to leave.’

Along with Martinez, Cedillo and de Leon can be heard engaging in racist banter about a small child.

Mike Bonin, the boy’s father, was among those calling for a full resignation.

Martinez also cut off District Attorney George Gascon, saying, “He’s with the blacks.”

She also called an Armenian colleague a “one-brow” and said the others had no chance of being elected in white neighborhoods.
