More than 30 pubs in the North East have been recognized at this year’s CAMRA’s The Good Beer Guide for 2023.
Management of Is consists of a number of pubs that impressed the volunteers after they visited each location and tried all the beers on offer.
Volunteers then rate the pubs based on beer quality, atmosphere, location and accommodation real ale lovers.
There were plenty of worthy pub names in the North East, however we’ve picked just a few from the region to make the list.

Darlington
Bondgate Tavern
Accommodation: 94 Bondgate, DL3 7JY
Despite being one of the area’s newest pubs, it has found its place on the list and is described by the guide as “a hub specializing in local real ales, conveniently located on Bondgate, where you’ll find a range of pubs and bars, where real ale is served.” ÂŁ
Crafty Merlin’s Micropub and Bottle Shop
Accommodation: 33 Bondgate, DL2 1QA
Opened during the pandemic, it’s a one-man operation with three beers on offer. The bar is described as having a “homey atmosphere with conversations at the fore.”
Darlington Snooker Club
Accommodation: 1 Corporation Road, DL3 6AE
This family run private snooker club is over 100 years old and has an affordable, comfortable lounge with TV and 10 quality snooker tables.

A beautiful cow
Accommodation: 37 Old Elvet, DH1 3HN
Grade-II listed, it has a unique history told in the guidebook and offers a range of single-variety beers that are often bought in the country.
Holy Grail
Accommodation:57 Crossgate, DH1 4PR
Once a board game cafe, the alfresco bar features craft beers. The guides tell us that there are several keg taps and two taps serving different types of beer.
Old elm
Accommodation:12 Crossgate, DH1 4PS
This historic bar has five different beers from different national varieties and plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere.
