Gavin and Stacey can be included an indefinite break for nowbut the creator and the star Ruth Jones insisted that if he ever returns, there’s one thing fans won’t be seeing for sure.
As fans of the Bafta-winning sitcom will remember, the 2019 Christmas special ended with an epic cliffhanger as Ruth Nessa’s character got down on one knee in front of Smithy, played by James Cordenwho also co-wrote the show.
Still, even if the sequel shows that Smithy and Nessa are finally an item, Ruth said we shouldn’t expect the characters to ever be particularly close on screen.
“You’ll also notice that Nessa and Smitty never kissed because James and I couldn’t do it,” she said in a recent interview. The sun.
The closest the pair got close was during their characters’ infamous corn-on-the-cob scene, in which Smithy and Nessa had one of their many post-KFC reunions, with a conversation about the aforementioned side dish serving as their foreplay.
Ruth recalled: “Corn in the ear [scene] it was so much fun to do because we had to be full of sexual desire and channel that lust through him. We had a tantrum and it was so much fun to do.”
last month Ruth ruled out the possibility of Gavin and Stacey coming back, explaining, “I’m so thankful that people like it so much. But it’s quite an unusual thing… it’s almost like when you mention the words Gavin and Stacey and people assume it’s back, but it’s not.’
Ruth added that she is “sure” she and James will “write something together” but the project is definitely “not going to be Gavin and Stacey”.
“Of course when he comes back to the UK I would think we’d try to get together and write again because it was a lot of fun doing that,” she said.
She reiterated this during her interview with The Sun, telling the tabloid: “I’m so flattered that people love it so much.
“We don’t write anything, we don’t plan to write anything. I don’t know what will happen in the future. I was so proud of it and it ended on an amazing cliffhanger and I don’t know if we could have improved on that.
“It was post-Brexit, good news, and maybe better to leave people wondering.”
Ruth and James began writing Gavin and Stacey together in the mid-2000s after meeting on the set of the ITV drama Fat Friends.
Since the series ended in 2010, Ruth has also written the Sky Stella series as well as a series of novels.
