Jacques Villeneuve says the way Formula 1 cars have evolved over the past 16 years is “amazing”.
The 1997 world champion, whose last Grand Prix was with BMW in 2006, was recently given the opportunity to drive the 2021 Alpine at Monza.
According to Le Journal de Montreal, it ended up being less than a second slower than the benchmark time set Esteban Ocan on the same day.
“It’s amazing how cars have evolved,” Villeneuve, 51, said. “The brakes are impressive, especially because you no longer have to press the pedal all the way down.
“These cars hold up impressively on the track. You can approach corners at very high speed with great confidence. It was an amazing experience.
“The car was so stable and, in general, quite easy to drive. Good grip.”
The French Canadian said the most difficult part of the experience was adjusting to how quickly the world goes by at today’s F1 speeds.
“It’s hard for the brain to understand speed,” Villeneuve said. “You feel like you’re watching a movie in fast-forward.
