England 75-0 South Africa: The Red Roses completed a 13-try HAMMERING to finish top of Group C at the Women’s Rugby World Cup to set up a quarter-final showdown in Australia – Ilwitz boss Sarina Wigman watching it in the stands

  • England beat South Africa 75-0 to top Group C at the Rugby World Cup
  • Sarina Wigman watched the game before the draw for the FIFA World Cup
  • Rosie Galligan and Connie Powell scored hat-tricks for the Red Roses.
  • England will now progress to the quarter-finals and play Australia next weekend

Lions manager Sarina Wiegmann watched her England rugby union team play South Africa to the ball in the final match of the Pool World Cup in Auckland.

Wigman led England to Euro glory this summer and was in New Zealand after being involved in the draw for next year’s World Cup.

The Dutch boss has already cemented her place in English sporting folklore and Simon Middleton – the Red Roses’ head coach – could well follow in her footsteps in the coming weeks.

Cons: Harrison (4), Rowland

Player of the match: Rosie Galligan (England)

England are in a good position for what would be their third World Cup success. Their win in South Africa from 13 tries was their 28th in a row and they have topped Group C and will face Australia in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The win was based on the strength of second-row forward Rosie Galligan and hooker Connie Powell, who scored a hat-trick. Now the serious work begins for England.

Middleton’s side were always going to make it to the knockout stages, but both the standard of their opposition and the pressure on them will now increase.

England made 13 changes to their starting squad for South Africa when they confirmed their squad on Thursday, with Middleton rested as their first star ahead of the knockout matches.

On the eve of the opening match, he was forced into further rotation. Key figures prop Vicky Cornborough and center Emily Scarratt have been removed from the bench due to minor injuries.

It was a precautionary move from Middleton, who wants both players to be ready for the quarter-finals.

Marley Packer captained England for the first time and the Saracens winger was immediately involved in the game from an early loss. Her team quickly got to work.

England’s line-out was a strong force for New Zealand and this was the source of their first try when Galligan scored. Galligan’s bow at the World Cup is memorable.

South Africa’s Kata Jacobs was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Poppy Cleal. Jacobs was lucky not to see red because she was upright at contact and didn’t try to go down.

Packer pointed this out to referee Lauren Jenner. Despite this, initially England’s accuracy was poor.

There were too many mismanagement and loss of possession in the first quarter. Middleton admitted before the match that the huge changes would mean “some lack of flow”.

No. 8 Cleal did take second in England after a monster tussle with Red Rose, and Galligan made it second in the afternoon from another drive. Even being fired from the original lineup couldn’t stop Galligan.

South Africa’s poor discipline was a problem. They missed 11 penalties in the first 30 minutes.

This allowed prop Shauna Brown, an 11th-hour addition to the team, to be overtaken. South Africa captain Nolusindiza Bui tried to stop the score illegally but failed.

Bouie became the second South African to be sent to the dustbin, while Powell finished England’s fifth. Once again, the main reason was the unexpected platform from which the attempt came.

Powell joined Galligan with a second goal to extend England’s half-time lead to 29-0 when play resumed. Zoe Harrison had her third transformation of the day.

Packer marked a memorable match with her try. The flanker was involved in some neat back-row play with Cleal. The floodgates were now open.

Galligan achieved a rarity in international rugby – scoring a hat-trick in the second row. Her third came after a powerful shot from the wing by Abby Doe. South Africa’s growing fatigue allowed England to press.

Their handling has improved. Cleal grabbed her second and substitute Sadia Cabaye’s try featured some brilliant interplay between defenders and forwards.

Dow scored in the corner and Powell joined Galligan as the treble hero. The only blemish for Galligan was a fourth try disallowed for dropping the ball on the line.

There was still time before the final whistle for Cabaye to complete the scoring, while England substitute Sarah Burn was booked for a header.

Like Jacobs earlier in the game, Bern was lucky not to be shown a red card.
