Britain must reform, not raise taxes: All-party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Taxation urges the Government to make the system fairer

A group of MPs and experts has warned that the UK should focus on tax reform and enforcement before increasing levies.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Anti-Corruption and Responsible Taxation is calling on the Government to make the tax system fairer as Chancellor Jeremy Hunt considers tax increases to plug a £40bn hole in the public purse.

Reform: By simplifying taxes and focusing more resources on prosecuting tax evaders, the APPG believes the Treasury will be able to get more money

By simplifying taxes and focusing more resources on prosecuting tax evaders, the APPG believes the Treasury will be able to raise more money without necessarily increasing the overall burden on businesses and households.

Tory MP Kevin Hollinrake said: “Recently HM Revenue and Customs Chief Executive Jim Harrah [said] that it raises £26 for every £1 spent on enforcement, so why shouldn’t we spend a lot more?

“And while we’re at it, spend more on prosecuting, especially advisers.”
