A man was taken to hospital with “serious injuries” after he was allegedly hit in the head with a bottle.

Police along with emergency crews were called to Montague Street in Worthing town center shortly before 2pm.

Officers could be seen on the street cleaning blood from the floor.

The man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries that are “not life-threatening or life-altering.”

Sussex Police believe this is an isolated incident but said people can expect an increased police presence in the area.

A spokesman said: “Anyone with information that could assist officers with their inquiries is asked to report it to police online or call 101 quoting serial number 582 of 22/10.

“Police would like to thank members of the public who were in the area during the incident and assisted officers with their enquiries.”

A 35-year-old man was detained on suspicion of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and is in police custody.

It comes after an an alleged stabbing at The Level in Brighton last night.
