England have been dealt a double blow ahead of the autumn internationals, with Owen Farrell and Jonny May ruled out of next week’s Jersey training camp with concussion and elbow injuries… as mentioned by Henry Slade

  • Saracens and Gloucester players withdrew from the squad on Monday
  • England’s crucial autumn Nations series for the World Cup
  • Farrell will follow the return-to-play protocol before returning from a concussion

England will begin their pre-autumn training camp in Jersey on Tuesday with Eddie Jones besieged by further disruption as he looks to start refining his World Cup selection plans.

According to Sportsmail , the RFS have confirmed that Owen Farrell has been unable to join the squad at their Channel Island base as he must go through return-to-play protocols at Saracens after being knocked out at Exeter.

And as MailOnline first revealedSale winger Tom Roebuck was called up in place of Jonny May, who dislocated his elbow.

Also, London Irish three-point sensation Henry Arundel is unable to take part in training in Jersey but will be in rehab camp with an untimely foot injury.

Newcastle’s Adam Radwan was drafted in as cover, while Henry Slade, who was surprisingly left out of the 36-man squad for the November trials, was also hastily reinstated.

The presence of the Exeter playmaking center will go some way to making up for Farrell’s potential absence in the series opener against Argentina at Twickenham on Sunday.

Jones also brought in rookie Charlie Atkinson, who was out of a job at Wasps.

This new excitement will rob Jones of his desire to sleep, coupled with the bigger picture of the World Cup.

The vision of the rear line has especially worsened. A year ago there was talk of a new era for England built around the axis of Marcus Smith and Farrell, but that 10-12 alliance failed to catch fire after frequent breaks.

For all the speculation about who could fill the starting half spot, it is undoubtedly Smith’s name on it – in Jones’ eyes. Had he been fit, Farrell would surely have worked at inside center.

Manu Tuilagi is likely to be deployed there in a midfield pairing with Slade, who has proven to be very effective in the past.

With 10 and a half months to go until the first match of the World Cup against Argentina in Marseille, there is very little stability and certainty in relation to the back line. Only two men shoo-in: Freddie Steward at full-back or wing and Smith at 10.

Farrell is another certainty when he fits. Tuilagi is still valued by Jones, but his availability is a matter of hope, not expectation. Raffy Quirke and Jack van Poortvliet threaten Ben Young’s status as a starter in the scrum. You can’t discount both Harry Randall and Alex Mitchell.

Slade appeared to be one of the stalwart leaders, but after shoulder surgery, he was ruled out of the practice squad. His fellow Exeter defender Jack Nowell is another Jones favourite, but another casualty of all-too-regular injuries.

All in all, Arundel and Tommy Freeman are the new shining lights, and Roebuck has also made an appearance, but May, Nowell and Anthony Watson aren’t just accepting that a change of guard is inevitable.

Others are fighting for inclusion. George Fairbank’s versatility is appreciated, and Jones continues to hope that Joe Cocanasiga can reach his potential.

Max Mullins should come again and so should Elliot Daly. Then there are a number of contenders for Harlequins: Joe Marchant, Kadan Murley, Danny Kerr and Luke Northmore.

The list goes on and on. In England there is so much choice but so little certainty.
