A 20-year-old New York City commuter was dragged to his death on the subway tracks after his ‘clothing or backpack’ became trapped in a closed door at an Upper West Side station

20-year-old young man New York A passenger was killed after being restrained and dragged along the tracks at the closing doors of a subway car at Manhattan’s Upper West Side station on Monday.

A southbound 1 train at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station struck a passenger around 5:00 p.m. after being blocked, according to law enforcement sources.

Investigators are talking with New York Post think a bag or item of clothing is caught in the door.

Rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations declared the man dead on the spot. No criminal activity is suspected, investigators said.

“A man on the tracks was struck by a train, and our thoughts are with his family, the train operator and the riders who witnessed this tragedy,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. Fox5. “We will look into the matter and learn any lessons that may emerge, as there is no higher priority than safety.”

“While the investigation is in its early stages, it appears that this was a horrific accident that did not involve criminal activity,” the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority said in a statement sent to CBS News.

The news comes just months after another subway passenger died in a similar incident in July.

A straphanger died after his pants caught on a subway train door in Brooklyn, pulling him across the platform and onto the tracks.

The 37-year-old man, who has not been identified, was getting off the northbound Q train at the Avenue M stop in Brooklyn around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday when he was pulled across the platform by a moving train and then thrown onto the tracks where another train was arriving.

Earlier this year, two people were pushed onto the tracks, including Michelle Alice Goh, who was killed after being pushed onto the Times Square station tracks by a homeless man.

A man who fell onto the tracks during rush hour during a fight in Queens was recently killed by a subway train, and another man was fatally stabbed while riding a train in Brooklyn.

After a series of violent deaths on the subway, Gov. Kathy Hachul and Mayor Eric Adams on Saturday announced a plan to increase police presence in the transit system.

“We are all fighting for our city, but there is still work to be done. That’s why we’re investing in mental health services, more metro staff and more affordable housing,” Adams said on Twitter on Sunday.
