Red Bull ‘absolutely’ deserve 2022 titles – Wolff

Toto Wolff admits that Max Verstappen and Red BullWorld title wins in 2022 “absolutely deserved”.

As the uncertainty and anger surrounding Red Bull’s budget breach continues, Red Bull has paid tribute to its late founder Dietrich Mateshitz on Sunday, taking his first constructors’ victory since 2013.

Every year since then, Mercedes won this championship cup.

“They’ve really been ahead everywhere this season and haven’t made any mistakes,” Mercedes boss Wolff said when asked in Austin about Red Bull’s success.

“They came out of the blocks with a good car and continued to develop – both titles are absolutely deserved,” he told Sky Deutschland.

Mercedes struggled in the first year of the new “ground effect” aerodynamic rules, but brought a large package of upgrades to the United States.

“The modernization has had an effect,” insists Wolff.

Lewis Hamiltonhowever, complained in Austin that the gap with Red Bull and Mercedes still existed – even though he was just 5 seconds behind Verstappen at the checkered flag as the Dutchman equaled his all-time record of 13 wins in a season.

“It wasn’t an easy car to drive,” Hamilton said afterward. “And we just weren’t quick enough.

“Now we still have three chances and hopefully the win will come at some point. But unless something drastic happens, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll have the real pace to be able to compete with them.”

George Russell in particular, fought with Mercedes 2022 in the last races, and on Sunday earned Carlos Sainzanger by hitting a Ferrari at the first turn of the US Grand Prix.

“George no longer trusts the machine,” Wolfe admits. “He is too unpredictable, too capricious in different conditions, too sensitive to the wind. Therefore, he no longer gets everything from it.

“But overall we are closer. The update worked and if the brave were lucky we could win.

“We’re taking hamster steps, but they’re bringing us closer together.”
