Current champions Australia suffered a crushing defeat against New Zealand, who finished second in the last edition. Australian captain Aaron Finch won the coin toss and asked the Kiwis to bat first on the turf at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Batting first, Kane Williamson’s men posted a mammoth 200 runs for the loss of just three wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
After the heavy defeat, Aaron Finch talked to the media and answered many questions from journalists. He was asked about the failure of the middle order in the very first match of the big tournament and what he made of that defeat to make a record for the rest of the tournament.
As an upper limit, we have to do our job: Aaron Finch
“If Warner and Finch don’t do anything, how can you trust this middle order and what are your conclusions after today’s defeat?” asked a CricTracker reporter
“Yes, I think the middle order is an important thing, as a top-order, we have to do our job, to be able to provide a foundation for them to be able to play in a way that expresses what suits them best, and then they can express themselves in that way,” Finch replied while talking to a CricTracker reporter.
Later, he also spoke about the effect of top order failure on the middle order as a match is won only with good run rate. The 35-year-old also admitted that it put pressure on the batting order later.
“So when we go to the second power play, one less than I think, it makes it easier because the outfielders come off the field, they can settle into the game. And when we get the run rate, there’s not a lot of pressure on them and later on they probably left too much for the middle and later order,” he added later.

Talking about the match, Devon Conway did a great job for the Kiwis, with a brilliant knock of 92 from 58 balls with seven boundaries and two sixes to his name. He was also named “player of the match” for his stellar performance in the tournament opener Black Hats.
