20-year-old young man Pennsylvania A National Guardsman who died in a training accident last weekend has been remembered by heartbroken friends as “angry and hot-tempered”.

Specialist Mackenzie Shay, also known as Mack, died Saturday after colliding with two military vehicles at Fort Indiantown Gap. Three others were taken to a local hospital and later released.

Shay is one of many soldiers who died during the exercise. She graduated from Mohawk High School in 2021 and was a student at Slippery Rock University.

The soldier was mourned by those who knew her.

“It broke my heart to hear that,” said Dave Bradle on the mohawk couch News of New Castle. “She was a very intelligent girl. She was a bit sassy and fiery and always tried to do her best and make her mark.’

Bradl added that Shay had wanted to join the military since she was in junior high.

Shay was a member of Company G, 28th Infantry Division, 128th Brigade Support Battalion, as the 92F Army Oil Supply Specialist.

Details of the disaster are not released.

Army Mayor General Mark J. Schindler said military officials are focused on taking care of Shay’s family.

“Our priority right now is taking care of the family and the Soldier, providing them with all the resources they need at this critical time,” Schindler said.

Governor Tom Wolf ordered all Pennsylvania and US flags to be flown at half-staff until the date of the soldiers’ internment. The date has not yet been set.
