“The collective responsibility that so many of us feel is fantastic to see and shows that there is a real commitment to sustainable development.

“Changing perceptions about recycling and raising awareness is what we want to do – it’s never too late to learn.”

Although small enterprises (31 percent) are considered more proactive than large ones (22 percent).

It also found that vegetables, fruit and detergents (all 19 percent) were the items shoppers were most likely to make sure they were buying from a sustainable source.

However, when it comes to making green choices, only 17 percent of those polled by OnePoll always recycle, while 35 percent do so often.

Although one in 20 admitted that they never make environmentally friendly choices.

A spokesman for Delphis Eco added: “Consumers can only buy what they can afford, so it’s important that we give them choice.

“We want to make sure we’re doing our best by leading by example.

“We offer refills for a number of our products, which means we use less plastic, which is ultimately good for our planet.
