Defended by Sven Goran-Eriksson Victoria Beckham, Colin Rooney and the rest of the 2006 World Cup WAGs after being accused of stealing the limelight.

The 74-year-old Swedish football manager insisted the group were doing “absolutely normal things” as the glamorous squad sat in the stands and enjoyed fun-filled evenings at Germany during the tournament.

The group were dressed in designer clothes and their endless shopping, bickering and late-night partying throughout the trip was seen as a major distraction for footballers at the time.

Talking to Boyle Sport World Cup, Sven reflected on the scandal and defended the group, but admitted that the increased attention on the Spice Girl had not “made it any easier”.

The coach also defended that the WAGs were in attendance and not “bored” in a hotel after the gang were seen in Germany.

“One of the wives [at the World Cup] was Victoria Beckham, and of course that didn’t make it any easier, it made her fantastic for the press,” he explained.

“We saw the wives maybe once a week for dinner and I decided when it should be, and on the other days of course the wives were invited here and there and the FA helped them not to sit in the hotel, not to be bored and I think , that it was great.”

Sven admitted that “everything the WAGs did at the time was seen as a scandal because of the increased attention they received at the time.

He added: “Whatever they did, it was a scandal. When they went to a bar, when they went to a restaurant, when they went shopping… [but] they were [doing] completely normal things. I found the reaction a bit unhelpful.’

It was widely claimed that the WAG’s partying behavior was the reason the partners were banned from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Elsewhere, David Beckham recently addressed claims that the WAG brigade attracted attention with their designer looks at the 2006 World Cup.

Speaking in June, he admitted the wives and girlfriends had gone “too far” after they stole the show.

In an interview for David admitted that Victoria cringes at some of her views when she reflects on the competition years later in an interview for Gary NevilleThe Overlap YouTube channel.

Reflecting on the decision to let the footballer’s families take center stage during the World Cup, David admitted he was never opposed to having loved ones support them at the tournament.

He said: “I think there was a focus on them. As captain of the England team, I have always believed that having wives, girlfriends and children around is not a bad thing.

“Once you’re in training camp, you’re in training camp, you’ve got to focus, but I think that’s not bad early in the tournament.”

But the sportsman, who captained the Three Lions at a tournament that saw them crash out in the quarter-finals after losing on penalties to Portugal, admitted the WAG’s obsession had gone “too far”.

He said: “Looking back, this whole culture – there was a lot of attention on it and whether people behaved in the right way, I don’t know.

“Even Victoria,” she is the first to say now, “what I was doing, what I was wearing, why do I need this?” That’s how it turned out [go too far].

“WAGs were talked about more than football. at that time, the players want to focus on the tournament. It’s gone too far, but I think it’s good to have the WAGs and the family around.’

Victoria joined the army of WAGs who visited Germany with their families during that World Cup, attracting attention in their designer outfits as they cheered on their husbands in the stands.

Known for her glamorous designer outfits, Victoria also wore an England Rocks shirt for England’s match against Trinidad and Tobago.

As he and Gary visited the Qatari hotel that will host England at this year’s World Cup, David admitted he preferred a remote location where the club could train and relax ahead of such important matches.

He told his former team-mate: “Every player was different. If you’re in a tournament, you had to take part in where we stayed, the atmosphere, the game room.

“As soon as we started bringing players like Rooney into the team, there were players who enjoyed the games. The things you seek are peace.

“You want to be in the middle of nowhere. As much as you want a bit of atmosphere, all you care about is the games. this [England’s Qatar hotel] perfect.”
