In her latest podcast Archetypes on Spotify, Meghan Markle said that “telling people what you need doesn’t make you demanding” as she argued that black women are called “angry”.

The Duchess of Sussex said she often “criss-crossed and tiptoed into the room” because she felt she couldn’t say what she wanted without being negatively perceived.

“I think the most awkward thing is when you say a sentence and the intonation goes up – like it’s a question. And you’re like, ‘Oh my God, enough, enough, whispering and tiptoeing,'” she says.

“Just say what you need. You are allowed to set a limit. You are allowed to be clear, it does not make you demanding. It doesn’t make you hard, it makes you clear.’

Meghan added that she felt “a rising tide is lifting all ships” and that “we’re all going to succeed to make sure it’s really great.”

The 41-year-old has been accused of bullying her staff at Kensington Palace, with ‘broken’ royal aides telling her they felt humiliated, ‘sick’, ‘horrified’, left ‘shaking’ with fear and reduced to tears.

The Duchess is said to have repeatedly berated staff and called them repeatedly. The royal has always strongly denied any claims of bullying.

As part of “destroying the myth of angry black women,” Megan talks to comedians Issa Rae and Zive to explore the stereotypes surrounding “women of color.”

Other revelations from the episode include:

  • Megan suggests that the “archetype” of the “angry black woman” who is “overly emotional” dates back to the days of slavery;
  • Says the trope has influenced her own behavior and she “makes a choice” to be as “grounded” as possible because of what “is going to be said no matter what”;
  • Reveals she watched the nomination hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first black Supreme Court justice, and found them “painful and fascinating”;
  • Says that when she was casting for black women as an actress, the characters always had “an edge or an attitude”;
