Kieran Burton named Man of the Match after 1-0 home win against AFC Telford United

Boro formed in a 3-5-2 formation, with attacking full-backs Ash Jackson and Kieran Veleji going forward on the wings.

The lowly visitors started brightly, creating two early chances as Rob Evans’ overhead kick was blocked by the excellent Bailey Goode and Byron Moore’s shot was easily saved Joe Cracknellbut it was Boro who opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Luca Colville was brought down in the center circle and Lewis Maloney headed a free-kick forward into the box, Will Thornton headed in and Kieran Burton fired past goalkeeper Luke Pilling.

Hooda played a pass to Ciaran McGuckin who turned and fired wide, then Jackson laid the ball off to Colville whose spot-kick was saved by Pilling and Kieran Glynn fired wide of the right-hand post.

Telford’s giant 6ft 5in striker Nathan Blissett (nephew of ex-England striker Luther) broke clear but Bailey Gooda made a superb tackle to stop his run and then Michael Coulson fired home for Boro just before half-time.

Early in the second half, Boro’s impressive 18-year-old loanee McGuckin attempted a 25-yard strike that deflected off Telford skipper Matty Brown, with the ball curling inches wide of the left-hand post.

Maloney took a corner and the ball fell to Colville on the edge of the area but his fierce shot was tipped over the bar by the flying keeper Pilling.

Telford then went close when a Brendan Daniels free-kick headed into the bottom right corner, but Cracknell pounced to clear the ball away.

The industrious Maloney made several attempts at goal, sending a free-kick straight at goal and then slotting home after receiving a through ball from Colville.

The visitors were enjoying a lot of possession and a long throw into the box by Brad Budd led to a scramble and Cracknell pounced to smother Blissett’s shot. Devon Green then flashed a shot inches wide and there was another shot blocked by Maloney. Kieran Glynn was involved at both ends, firing wide from 25 yards before getting back to block danger man Telford Budd’s shot.

The visitors applied late pressure as they tried to salvage a point, but Burton, Hooda and Thornton were all excellent in defence, Hooda blocking Blissett’s shot and Thornton saving Jason Oswell’s shot, while keeper Cracknell, who was confidently in charge, kept out long-range shots as from Brown as well as Green as Boro went on to hold all three points.
