Virat Kohli’s ongoing struggles with the bat have sparked debate over his place in the side as the T20 World Cup approaches. The latest person to criticize the former Indian captain Kapil devwhich raised the question of Kohli’s selection in the T20I squad when a player like Ravichandran Ashwin does not qualify for the selection squad.

Ashwin, who is currently No. 2 in the ICC rankings for Test bowlers, has not been part of the white-ball squad since January and did not feature for India in the fifth Test against England. The veteran spinner’s selection in the national team remains in doubt even with nearly 450 wickets in Test matches.

Kapil pointed out that if Ashwin is unable to make it into the team, then Kohli’s place in the T20I squad should also be in doubt due to his continued poor form.

“Yes, the situation now is that you may be forced to sit Kohli from the T20 playing eleven. If the world’s No. 2 bowler Ashwin can be ruled out of the Test side, so can the (once) world’s No. 1 batsman. Play players in uniform when you have many options. You can’t just go for reputation but you have to look for current form,” Kapil told ABP News.

If selectors don’t pick Kohli, it could be because he’s not performing: Kapil Dev

when sat out the T20I series opener against England but returned for the remaining two games of the series. Meanwhile, according to reports, the former Indian captain has asked to be left out of the T20I squad that goes on tour of the West Indies later this month. Kapil expressed his opinion on this and stated that if he is not in this squad, then the selectors have decided to exclude him because he is not performing at his usual high level.

“Virat is not batting at the level we have seen over the years. He’s made a name for himself with his performances but if he’s not performing then you can’t keep performing youngsters out of the team. You might call it a vacation, someone else might call it a reset. Obviously, if the selectors don’t pick him (Kohli), it could be because the big player is not performing,” quipped the legendary cricketer.
