Talking to GB news host Dan Wootton, Daily Express columnist Carol Malone said Her Majesty was perhaps our “greatest monarch ever” and that Elizabeth Day would be a fitting tribute. A former News of the World columnist added that the statue of the late monarch should be on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar square.

She said: “It’s a brilliant idea. I know in the country we always ask for public holidays for all sorts of things, but this is something really important.

“Elizabeth is arguably our greatest ever monarch and what better way to commemorate her than on Elizabeth Day.

“It’s not just about her memory, but it’s a chance for us to teach our children about the kind of Queen she was.

“And on top of all that, in the bank holidays, we also have to put up a statue in Trafalgar Square.

“And there was a lot of talk about the fact that many MPs are behind the fact that our newspapers are pushing for this.

“Talking about her on her favorite horse in the square on the fourth pedestal, and I think that’s a great idea too.

“Because, as Dan Snow said, ‘this is to celebrate our history.’

“It’s about our history, and on a day when it’s a public holiday, it means communities can come together.

He said, “Well, Dan, I’m going to give you some numbers, sorry to bore you.

“The £1.36 billion is weekend spending.

“Although these are government estimates.

“According to PWC data in May, this could be as much as £837 million.

“Now that I may humbly suggest that we are a seafaring nation, it is about time we moved on to the Royal Yacht Britannia Dan, here is the answer.

“It’s called the Royal Yacht Elizabeth, it’s now worth around £250 million.

“You can buy four of them for the price of your holiday.

“And so we get a chance to look at it to go for it.

“The biggest and most popular tourist attraction in Scotland is, you guessed it, the royal yacht Britannia.

“We love ships, we love yachts.

“It’s very important that the country supports this, including all GB news.”
