The game was created by software engineer Josh Wardle, who sold the popular word game to the New York Times after it became a global sensation.

In a statement on Twitter, he wrote: “Since launching Wordle, I’ve been blown away by the response from everyone who has played.

“The game has become bigger than I could have ever imagined (which I suppose is no mean feat considering I made the game for an audience of one person).

“It’s been incredible to watch the game bring so much joy to so many, and I’m so grateful for the personal stories some of you have shared with me – from how Wordle brings together long-distance family members, sparks friendship rivalry and supports recovery.

“On the other hand, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t stunning.”
