Texas Governor Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden and ordered the Texas National Guard to begin arresting migrants in Texas and returning them to the Mexican border.

On Saturday, Abbott slammed the president, saying: “Biden’s border policies are destroying local communities along the border.”

He added that the Texas Department of Public Safety has already begun making arrests since his executive order went into effect on July 7.

It’s unclear how many migrants have been arrested since then, but photos released by Abbott and the Texas Police Department show a handful of illegal immigrants being rounded up and loaded onto a waiting bus before being driven back to the Mexican border.

Members of the National Guard and Texas DPS have been charged with implementing the policy, according to the governor’s office.

In total, about 10,000 officers and soldiers were involved. Texas shares a border with Mexico of over 1,200 miles.

Abbott also criticized Biden for “refusal to do his job” and said he is not enforcing immigration laws passed by Congress.

The governor added, “The cartels have been emboldened and enriched by President Biden’s open border policies, smuggling in record numbers of people, weapons and deadly drugs like fentanyl.”

Abbott’s plan to tackle illegal immigration, called Operation Lone Star, was first unveiled in March 2021.

On his official website, Abbott lists the clear achievements of Operation Lone Star in his state’s fight against illegal immigration.

Among them, Abbott lists securing $4 billion in funding for Texas border enforcement efforts, signing 15 anti-trafficking laws in Texas, and creating “task forces and creating” new vehicle checkpoints targeting semi-trucks.”

The intersection is at or near its highest level in about two decades. At the Texas border, US authorities stopped 523,000 illegal migrant crossings between January and May, compared with 417,000 during the same period a year ago.

On Thursday, the White House criticized Abbott’s latest plan, with spokesman Abdullah Hassan saying, “Governor Abbott’s record on immigration does not give us confidence in what he has in store now.

“His so-called Operation Lone Star has put National Guardsmen and law enforcement officers in dangerous situations and led to a logistical nightmare requiring a federal bailout, and his secondary inspections of trucks crossing into Texas are costing a billion dollars a week on just one bridge without a turn.” . not a single case of human or drug trafficking,” said White House Press Secretary Abdullah Hassan.

“President Biden is focused on real policy solutions for real security on our border,” the statement added.

Abbott’s decision to enact the policy comes a week after 53 migrants were found dead in a hot tractor trailer in San Antonio in 103F heat. The incident is one of the deadliest human-smuggling tragedies at the US-Mexico border.

A San Antonio fire official said they found “heaps of bodies” and no sign of water in the truck, which was found next to railroad tracks on the city’s southern edge, near Interstate 35, which leads to the Mexican border.

Sixteen survivors, including four children, were taken to nearby hospitals for heatstroke and exhaustion. They were found by a local worker who surveyed the scene after hearing a faint cry for help coming from the truck.

Operation Lone Star has been described as the “centerpiece” of Governor Abbott’s re-election campaign. The governor will face former U.S. Rep. Beth O’Rourke in the November election

Earlier in July, the Justice Department announced it was actively investigating Abbott’s policies as a possible violation of civil rights, according to ABC News.

In a statement, the Department of Justice said the department received information that the Texas Department of Public Safety “discriminated on the basis of race and/or national origin in its operations related to Operation Lone Star by arresting certain individuals for misdemeanor violations and traffic stops.” on the basis of their perceived or actual race or national origin.’

In response to the Justice Department’s statement, Abbott’s press secretary, Renee Eze, accused the Biden administration of “attacking the one state that is taking unprecedented action to do the job of the federal government,” according to ABC News.

Talking to KRGV, Bill Piatt, a constitutional law professor at St. Mary’s University, said of the policy: “States do not have the authority to enforce immigration law. A law enforcement officer can’t look at someone and say, ‘I think you look like you don’t have a permit to be here,’ and make an arrest, which is a violation of the constitution.”

Speaking further WFAA, Republican political consultant Matt Mackowiak cited “border politics” as the reason the poll showed O’Rourke closing the gap on Abbott to six points.

Mackowiak said he doesn’t feel the gun control issue will be enough to unseat Abbott, saying, “It’s just not working in Texas. I kind of doubt that Uvalde is going to change decades and decades and decades of public opinion on this issue, at least the voters’ opinion on this issue.”

On Thursday, Abbott’s plan received lukewarm support from the conservative think tank Center for American Renewal. The group acknowledged Abbott’s assertiveness but criticized him for failing to call illegal immigration an “invasion”.

The statement said, “We affirm Governor Abbott’s recognition that the facts on the ground along the border meet the Constitution’s understanding of an invasion.”

He continued, “However, the governor does not appear to be formally declaring an invasion or ordering the National Guard and Department of Public Safety to take illegal immigrants directly across the border into Mexico. This is critical. Otherwise it’s still catch and release.’

Further law enforcement deployments to help Texas fight illegal immigration come as Texas Others were joined by Attorney General Ken Paxton Republicans in the draft to the outstanding Democratsincluding the president, to apologize to the four border guards who were cleared of flogging migrants.

In September 2021, four Border Patrol agents were falsely accused of beating a group of Haitian migrants at the southern border.

A 500-page report released by Customs and Border Protection this week shows that the narrative surrounding the flogging allegations, which have been perpetuated The White House was false.

During an appearance on “Hannity” Friday, Paxton said, “There’s no doubt it was political. And it’s very unfortunate for these border guards who gave their lives to protect our border and protect Americans.”

The Prosecutor General continued: “And here they are punished, they should be rewarded. They need to be protected. Instead, their careers could be ruined and they would be humiliated in front of the entire American public.”

Paxton told Greg Jarrett, who was filling in for Sean Hannity, “I just think it’s really wrong. I would expect that instead, Joe Biden and some of these political leaders should come out and apologize to these guys for what they’ve been through.”

Images of agents on the banks of the Rio Grande in Del Rio, Texascaused a humanitarian protest and a strong reaction from Biden, who called on the officers to “pay” for the treatment of Haitians.
