Sunrise viewers tune out as David “Kochi” Koch takes annual leave to attend daughter’s wedding, allowing Karl Stefanovic’s Today show to climb in the ratings

According to a new report, Sunrise’s ratings are down and David Kochi Koch has been on annual leave.

It was announced in June that the 66-year-old father-of-four, who has hosted the Channel Seven breakfast show since 2002, would be out of work for around three weeks.

The breakfast show’s ratings fell to 207,000 in the first week Kochi was away, Women’s day reports.

This allowed the Carl Stefanovic-hosted Today show to catch up, bringing in 200,000 viewers the same week.

The very subtle difference between the two shows was encouraging for Today as the show continues to close the gap.

Koch’s temporary replacement on Sunrise is Olympian-turned-sports reporter Matt Shirvington, who now appears to be his regular replacement.

Koch, who was just a few weeks ago forced to leave work early due to a bout of laryngitis, said he was looking forward to walking his daughter Georgie down the aisle.

Georgie tied the knot with long-term partner Alex Merkel, affectionately known as ‘The German’ in the Koch family, in a public ceremony at Regent’s Park in London on Sunday.

In June, Channel Nine’s Breakfast show beat its top-rated rival Sunrise. Sydney and Brisbane reports TV tonight.

The news comes at a perfect time for Today, as the show celebrates 40 years on Channel Nine next week.

Meanwhile, the surge in ratings is comforting for Today co-presenter Carl, 47, who was up for the Gold Logie but missed out to Hamish Blake.

Carl, who co-hosts the show with Alison Langdon, says Today is making a comeback after a terrible year that struggled for ratings.

The 14-year veteran of the show said: “The last four weeks have been very positive for us on the East Coast.”

“We’re going to win Brisbane a long time, Sydney again, so we’re fighting back.”

It's a busy show in June
