Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot during a speech in the western city of Nara, state broadcaster NHK said.

The Nara City Fire Department said the 67-year-old man suffered injuries to the right side of his neck and left collarbone, adding that he was in cardiopulmonary arrest before being taken to hospital.

NHK showed footage of Abe collapsed in the street as security guards ran to him.

A cloud of white smoke could be seen Mr. Abe made a campaign speech near the station.

A reporter at the scene said they heard two shots in quick succession during Mr. Abe’s speech.
