Shortly after her Instagram post, it was revealed that Rebel opened up about her relationship and sexuality to get ahead of the story with Sydney Morning Herald after an Australian newspaper threatened to “out” her.

The newspaper’s gossip columnist Andrew Hornery then accused the actress of “breaking” his scoop by speaking out on her own terms.

“Thank you for your comments, it’s been a very difficult situation but we’ve tried to handle it with grace,” Rebelle later wrote in response to a Twitter message from Channel 10’s Kate Doak.

In his original piece, Hornery wrote that he gave the “Bridesmaids” star two days to answer questions, effectively forcing the actress’ hand, but became angry when the star decided to take control of the narrative.

“With great caution and respect, this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson’s representatives Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with Los Angeles-based loungewear designer Ramona Agruma before publishing a single word.” — he wrote.

“Big mistake. Wilson decided to take a closer look at the story by posting a message about her new “Disney princess” on Instagram early Friday morning, the same platform where she previously flaunted her handsome ex-boyfriend, wealthy American beer baron Jacob Bush.

“Given how bitterly Wilson has complained about poor standards of journalism … her choice to ignore our discreet, genuine and honest inquiries was distasteful.”

In his original article, gossip columnist Andrew Hornery wrote that he gave the “Bridesmaids” star two days to answer questions, effectively forcing the actress’ hand, but became angry when the star decided to take control of the narrative.

The article sparked a backlash on social media, with users surprised by the paper’s insensitivity, prompting editor Beaven Shields to write a lengthy statement denying wrongdoing and wishing the couple well.

Hornery after apologized for his “tone” in the article and said he never meant to “cause pain” when he approached the star about her relationship.

“I’m truly sorry that Rebel is having a hard time,” Hornery said in the column that replaced his previous article. “It was never my intention. But I can see that she handled it all with extraordinary grace.”

He added that “as a gay man, I am well aware of how painful discrimination is.” The last thing I want to do is cause this pain to someone else.”
