The ten best summer Pinot Grigios

Despite its popularity, Pinot Grigio is not among the top ten most planted grape varieties in the world. Cabernet Sauvignon takes the top spot and the most popular white grape is the unknown Irene – which just goes to show you can be at the top but no one has ever heard of you. But what about Pinot Grigio?

Of the nearly 60 million liters of Pinot Grigio sold in the UK, just over a third came from Italy, with much of the rest coming from the US, Australia, Romania and New Zealand.

Which came as little surprise, as you’d be hard-pressed to find a non-Italian Pinot Grigio in the wine aisles of supermarkets. In this regard, Asda stands out with its £3.99 Nice Drop, a Chilean Pinot Grigio, ranked 8th WineUncorked The top ten list and Germany’s Kleine Kappelle from the Co-op at number 7. But there are a few others that didn’t quite make it – look out for Australia’s McGuigan (£7.50, Co-op), Hungary’s Campanula (£9.99 , Laithwaites) and California Barefoot Pinot Grigio (£6, most supermarkets).

Wherever it comes from, the light pear and lemon flavors of Pinot Grigio pair perfectly with the summer sun and just sitting there with a glass in hand. It pairs well with lighter-tasting foods like seafood linguini or picnic appetizers, and is a great stock to keep in your cupboard. So why not go out and get a few bottles! The WineUncorked The top ten list will help you find the best ones.
