London [UK]July 9 (ANI): Top seeds Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai battled hard to win the women’s doubles semi-finals on Friday, beating unseeded Danielle Collins and Desiree Krawczyk to reach the Wimbledon final.

Playing in just their third tournament together as a team, Zhang and Mertens needed one hour and 42 minutes to successfully fend off a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 comeback from the Americans.

Mertens and Zhang didn’t drop a set all week and also got off to a flying start in the semi-finals, taking a 4-0 lead. Zhang’s volleys were crisp and Mertens saw perfect serves to come back from 0-30 down in the final game of the opening set to cut the lead to one set with an ace.

But after a set and a break, Collins and Krawczyk took the second set, taking control of the net and breaking Mertens 5-3 en route to parity.

However, Mertens and Zhang took control late in the third set, using great contact to win long points and damage Krawczyk in the long game at 4-3. Mertens had a solid volley in the game at the top en route to match point, where Collins fired wide.

The seeding was entirely up for grabs in the final this fortnight, as Mertens and Zhang will now face No. 2 seeds Barbara Krejcikova and Ekaterina Siniakova for the Wimbledon women’s doubles title.

In the preliminary semi-final on the center court, Krejcikova and Siniakova beat the fourth seeded Lyudmila Kichanok and Yelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-2. (ANI)
