Championship leader Max Verstappen cruised to victory in the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix, earning pole position for Sunday’s race.

Having only finished seventh in last week’s British Grand Prix, Verstappen was under pressure to respond at the first opportunity.

With Sunday’s Grand Prix grid decided by the second sprint race of the season, the Dutchman was given the chance to reassert his dominance over the 23-lap race.

Alpine Esteban Ocan ended up in sixth place, helped him Kevin Magnussen, Mick Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton fighting for the last two points behind him.

Magnussen successfully held on in seventh place, while Hamilton eventually overtook Schumacher in the closing stages to finish the race in eighth place.

It was disappointing for the Alpine colleague Fernando Alonsowho was unable to start the race due to tire problems before the opening lap.

In terms of the championship, Verstappen now leads team-mate Perez by 38 points, while Leclerc is 6 points further back in third.
