The National Highways Agency said traffic is currently stopped, with traffic police officers and Essex Police in attendance. The road was closed around 7 am.

The road was reopened shortly before 7.30am, with the exception of one of the four lanes, which remains closed pending the incident.

In an update, National Highways said: “Traffic on the #M25 anti-clockwise between J26 and J25 in #Essex has been closed, however lane 1 (of 4) will remain CLOSED to allow the vehicles involved in the collision to be rescued. .

“Please be careful on the approach and safe road. Thank you for your patience.”

It is not yet known whether anyone was injured in the accident.

Meanwhile, the M26 westbound between J2A and the M25/A21 in Kent has also been closed following a multi-vehicle crash.

Emergency services, including Kent County Police, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.
