An Irishman has been jailed for killing an intruder who broke into his home.

Dean Carey was just 17 when he stabbed Jack Power in the chest in July 2018.

The 25-year-old fisherman rolled down the window and entered the Waterford area to confront him and accuse him of damaging his car.

Carrie, now 21, stabbed him with a kitchen knife, causing the attacker to fall and die on the spot.

The judge said that although he had not caused the trouble, the convict resorted to excessive and disproportionate violence by using a knife on a man who was unarmed.

At the time Carey was described as ‘thin’ and the victim, who had been drinking, was tall and of good build.

Mr Power burst into Kerry’s bedroom and the court heard it was suggested the defendant’s mother was also attacked in the melee.

Carey told police he found the knife by his bed, but Irish mirror In reports, the judge said he did not believe the court had heard the truth about the “origin” of the weapon.

Officers found him crying in the kitchen after he called the police himself.

The judge said he took into account Carey’s sincere remorse and young age at the time of the incident when handing down the sentence.

He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after a jury decided the defendant acted in self-defense and acquitted him of murder.

Judge McDermott admitted the trial was “cold comfort to relatives whose loss is profound and lifelong”, the Mirror reported.

Mr Power was described as an “exceptionally hard-working young man” who was “supported by his father’s encouragement”.

He added: “Nothing I do or say will ease this suffering. The sentence I pass must be proportionate to the gravity of the manslaughter, as well as commensurate with it [Kerrie’s] circumstances.’

The judge sentenced him to four years and six months with the last year suspended for time already served.
