FerrariThe focus is clearly shifting to the 2023 season Max Verstappen wraps up what appears to be an inevitable second driver’s title.
In fact, while it will rely on a particularly bad weekend for Ferrari and Charles Leclerc, Red Bull star could theoretically capture the title next weekend in Singapore.
“It will take too much luck to win the title in Singapore,” Speed Week quoted the reigning world champion as saying.
“I just want to go there and try to win that race as well, but we’re having a great season. We have to appreciate it and try to enjoy the moment a little bit.”
Sainz, who is Leclerc’s Ferrari team-mate, seems resigned to the reality that the team from Maranello will have to try again to beat Red Bull in 2023.
“I would like a consistent finish to the season now, especially with what has happened to us this year,” he told El Mundo Deportivo newspaper.
“I would like to have a quiet last part of the season with less things happening to us and to be able to find a rhythm for next year, which will be a new opportunity,” the Spaniard added.
That said, Sainz insists Ferrari can be proud to have laid a “solid foundation” for the next step.
“We have to try to improve a few things like reliability and consistency,” he said.
“We have to keep in mind that this year we were fighting against a team like Red Bull who do everything perfectly. We have to learn from it and be the team that does it like that next year.”
Sainz also thinks Ferrari is leading under fire Mattia Binottohas been the subject of a unique level of criticism that only the team from Maranello seems to face.
“This is what I was warned about,” he said.
“They told me to be ready because the press in Italy will be very heavy, but until you’re inside you don’t understand.
“I’ve read some disproportionate criticism of the team, but that’s part of the beauty of being part of such a great organization and emblem of the motoring world.
– I don’t see a problem in this.
