She said she was inspired to visit as a result of her work as an ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), in particular a meeting with an activist from Ukraine called Ilyess El Kortbi.

“In fact, every day as a UNEP ambassador, I am reminded of the enormous contribution of Ukrainian climate scientists, renewable energy experts and environmentalists of all stripes,” she wrote.

“They are living through a terrible war that is being financed by fossil fuels. They somehow find the determination to keep going, working and agitating for all of humanity. So I always knew that if I had the chance, I would try to show up too,” her Instagram post explained.

“On the night train to Kyiv, I looked out the window and saw endless fields… a reminder that Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world, this bastion of culture, science and humanity is also the cradle of resistance and courage and commitment.

“I can’t tell you how emotional this journey has been. Right now too much can be expressed in words, but I am in solidarity, I deeply respect and respect the people of Ukraine,” Ms. Goulding wrote.
