Bros has been touted elsewhere as the first gay Hollywood rom-com from a major studio – despite coming more than a quarter of a century after the 1996 classic The Birdcage starring Nathan Lane and Robin Williams.
The comedy about opposites attract stars Eichner as a bookish workaholic who runs a museum and finds himself falling for a jokester played by Luke MacFarlane.
Both main actors are over 40, which fits Eichner’s idea of creating a gay film that is not aimed at young people.
“Most LGBTQ content today is about gay teenagers, presented in a very sitcom-like style. We’re dressed in cute little outfits and we’re here to be adorable. I am not related. Where are the adults?” he told Variety.
“I look at these weird programs and I don’t know who these gay people are. They don’t look, sound or act like me and my gay friends.’
During a meeting with the network, Eichner also defended his decision to use an all-queer cast even for regular rom-com roles.
“It’s not that a naturalistic actor should never play a gay man. But we need a more level playing field. It is about correcting an extreme imbalance.”
