The action came exactly two weeks after the Supreme Court ruled to overturn it Roe v. Wade — as many states close access to the procedure, abortion doctors are moving their practices across the country and progressive advocates are increasingly angry that the administration didn’t respond more quickly.

“We’ve gotten a lot of lip service from this administration, and all the calls to ‘just vote’ aren’t enough,” said Sharmin Hussain, director of the campaign Abortion was freed Coalition, a group of more than 150 reproductive rights organizations. “We cannot wait 190 days [until the election]. People need help now, and that wait can mean life or death for people.”

Activists like Hossein and Democrats in Congress and across the country pushed the Biden administration to go further, sending letters to Biden is asking for travel vouchers and other financial support for people who cross state lines for the procedure, and is asking him to lift the FDA’s remaining restrictions on abortion pills, which include requiring any pharmacy that dispenses the drug to obtain a special license. Democrats too lobbied the Pentagon to allow service members working in states that have banned abortions or are planning to do so to take time off to travel for the procedure, while some governors insisting the White House update drug import rules to protect people who can travel to Canada for abortion pills.

They also asked the White House to examine the legality and logistics of leasing federal land or federal facilities, such as Veterans Affairs clinics, to abortion providers to restore access in red states.

“The urgency of the action should match the emergency,” said Morgan Hopkins of All*Above All. “People need abortions now. Every minute and every day since that decision, people have been denied help. Voters are watching very carefully how their chosen ones will now appear before them.”
