Singer Becky G reflected on her life and budding music career during an in-depth interview and cover shoot with Teenage fashion this month.
The Shower hitmaker, 25, admits she didn’t have a rosy childhood and says she had her first ‘mid-life crisis’ at the age of nine.
Becky, born Rebecca Marie Gomez, said she dropped out of school as a teenager and soon became the “sole breadwinner” for her family at the age of 15 after her parents lost their home.

Becky said she had a “mid-life crisis…at nine” and wanted to get a job amid her parents’ financial problems, but was too young.
“I don’t know what [my drive was all about]. “I’m still trying to figure it out and unpack it in therapy, but it was out of necessity,” she explained.
She then recalled how her parents lost their home in 2008.

“We lost our house in 2008 [financial] accident,” Becky began.
“My parents were broke and we had to check ‘homeless’ on our lunch applications. I remember how embarrassing it was when my lunch was taken away because of the shortage.’
Her family moved into her grandparents’ garage after they lost their home.

Becky said she grew up quickly after dropping out of high school, where she was bullied by her classmates, and soon became an “emotional confidante for her parents”.

Speaking about what’s next for her and her career, she said she wants to “keep learning” no matter what.
“A true artist knows in his heart that I want to continue. I want to keep learning. I’m that little sponge that just likes to soak up as much as I can, understanding the meaning and reason behind something,” she said.
