Former world champion Amir Khan has detailed the worst time of his life, when he suffered from injuries, fraud and marital problems.
Khan admits he made a lot of mistakes after spending two years out of the ring before starting his comeback.
Speaking to Gary Neville, the Bolton man opened up about his struggles, which his wife Faryal helped him overcome after the row.
The 35-year-old retiree, who won a silver medal for Great Britain after winning several bouts at the 2004 Athens Olympics as a teenager, was as open as ever about what happened.
Aamir Khan’s mental health issues
“Mental health is a very big thing. It is good that they are starting to talk about it. Mental health issues have happened to the best of us, for example Tyson Fury and other fighters,” Khan said Overlap.
“I had a massive [mental health] problems. Back in 2016, I had a big fight with my wife. I didn’t box. I was out of the ring for two years and gained weight.
“You know, I wasn’t happy with myself. I don’t know what it was.’
Injuries
About the problematic disease of his boxing tools, he added: “I had an operation on my hand. I went back to training and I was still sore.
“Then I had to have another operation and another. I had three surgeries before I got better.
“I really thought I would never fight again. It put me on the downer, know that I’m at the peak of my career, but I can’t fight.”
Preparing his body for a fight with fellow boxer Kell Brook was just the beginning. Khan had to mentally recover after being cheated out of millions.
Investments
During that time, I made some stupid investments that didn’t pay off. I think, how will I live on?
“I lost five million [pounds] through various investments at the same time as my manual operation. So you can imagine the spiral I went into. I lost a lot of money and couldn’t box because of my arm.
“I built a wedding hall in Bolton that cost about twelve million. Someone took advantage of me when I was boxing and in training camp.
“They caught me when I kept saying yes to everything. What helped me was getting my wife involved as she began to scrutinize every detail.
“At that time, I fell out with everyone. I had no family, manager and no one to support me.”
Aamir Khan’s career
It’s a far cry from Khan’s career in the late 2000s. He left England for the United States and greatly increased his status.
Victories over Marcos Maidana and Zab Judah linked Khan with fights against Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather in the mid-2010s.
Both never happened, but Khan did get a big payday late in his career with a fight against Brook.
He also hosts a TV show on a UK network that talks about his personal family life.
It’s not all doom and gloom for Aamir Khan.
